Chiropractor Questions & Reimbursements
Frequently asked questions
A chiropractor can provide a solution for a wide range of muscle and joint complaints. Interestingly, more and more people are choosing to have their spine checked regularly to keep their spine and nervous system healthy and prevent health problems. Just as we have our teeth checked regularly, regular adjustments to your spine can have a significant impact on your overall health. A chiropractor can also help you improve your performance. More and more people, including top athletes, are turning to chiropractic care to help them achieve their goals.
A referral from your GP is not necessary. You can make an appointment with the chiropractor directly, without this having any consequences for the reimbursement by the health insurers. However, the amount of the reimbursement varies greatly, depending on the different insurers. You can ask your health insurer about the conditions. Almost all health insurers include chiropractic treatments in their (supplementary) package, see the reimbursement overview. All insurers reimburse treatments performed by chiropractors who are registered with the SCN and/or are members of the NCA. To be sure that chiropractic is reimbursed, it is best to contact your own insurer. For an overview per health insurer: Chiropractic reimbursement
Chiropractors and manual therapists are professionals who focus on the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors view the body as a whole system (a vitalistic approach, addressing the cause of the problem) and emphasize the interaction between the nervous system (our brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves) and the entire body, while manual therapists have a symptomatic approach (treating symptoms). Chiropractors go to the cause of the problem. Compared to manual therapists, chiropractors distinguish themselves through their knowledge of the musculoskeletal system (in particular the spine), the nervous system, the analysis of X-rays and MRI images and by integrating general diagnostic skills. Registered chiropractors have therefore always completed a university education, which does not necessarily apply to manual therapists.
Chiropractors and osteopaths both have a natural and holistic approach. Osteopaths focus on joints and organs and use mobilizations for treatment, while chiropractors focus on the spine and nervous system and use manipulation to help their clients. Chiropractic emphasizes the interaction between the nervous system (our brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves) and the musculoskeletal system and related complaints. Since the spine is central to this connection, the chiropractor has devoted a very large part of his/her training to the diagnosis and treatment of spinal-related problems in particular.

Chiropractors and physiotherapists are professionals who focus on the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors emphasize the interaction between the nervous system (our brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves) and the musculoskeletal system and associated complaints. Chiropractors see the body as a whole system (a holistic/vitalistic approach, tackling the cause of the problem) and emphasize the interaction between the nervous system (our brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves) and the entire body, while physiotherapists focus on the functioning of the muscles. Physiotherapists usually use a symptomatic approach (treating symptoms), chiropractors go to the cause of the problem.

There is no mandatory deductible of €385 or a higher voluntary deductible for chiropractic care. The deductible only applies to care from the basic insurance and not to care from the supplementary package. More about the costs and reimbursement: Rates and reimbursement chiropractic care
The number of treatments is highly dependent on a number of different factors, such as the type of complaint, the duration of the complaint, the age and general health of the patient. Usually your chiropractor can make a reasonable estimate of the number of treatments that are necessary to solve your specific complaint.
When a patient visits the chiropractor for the first time, he or she generally proceeds as follows:
The treatment begins with an interview about your state of health, lifestyle and complaints.
The chiropractor then continues with a physical examination in which he applies neurological, orthopedic, and chiropractic examination methods.
Based on these examinations, the chiropractor will determine whether your complaint can be treated chiropractically and will discuss the possibilities with you. If necessary, you will be referred to a specialist or GP.
Then the treatment can begin. The chiropractor uses multiple treatment techniques. He or she mainly uses precisely dosed pressure techniques on the spinal column, skull or elsewhere. In addition to applying pressure techniques, it is possible that you will be prescribed exercises or given advice on good posture or nutrition.
When you are being treated by your chiropractor, you may hear a "cracking" sound during some chiropractic techniques. This is not bones or ligaments rubbing against each other, but gas being released due to a decrease in pressure in the joint. Negative pressure causes gas bubbles to form in the joint fluid and these produce the cracking sound. You can compare it to, for example, opening a jar of jam for the first time.

Here are a few reasons why you should make an appointment with a chiropractor:
Having your spine checked regularly is essential if you want to keep it healthy.
Our modern lifestyle, such as too little exercise, too much sitting, our increasingly busy lives, all these stress factors cause enormous stress on our body, especially our spine and nervous system.
Your spine protects your nervous system. This means that a spine that is not functioning properly will impact your body's communication system and therefore negatively impact your overall health.
To maintain good posture. A well-moving spine enables you to maintain good posture into old age.
To improve your sleep. Regular chiropractic adjustments help reduce stress on your nervous system. This helps you sleep better and have more energy.
To prevent spinal degeneration (arthrosis). A well-aligned spine that moves well degenerates less quickly.
More and more people are choosing to turn to chiropractic care to keep their health at an optimal level. By having regular check-ups, they avoid the negative impact on health caused by our modern stress.
Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of helping people live 100% of their potential throughout their lives. Chiropractors focus on preventing and correcting problems that originate in the spine and nervous system. Chiropractors recognize the body’s ability to heal itself. Chiropractors have a natural, vitalistic and holistic approach. This means that they see the individual as a whole. They see the body as a complex system in which everything is interconnected and interdependent. Chiropractors focus on the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms. They do not use surgery or drugs to help their clients. Instead, they facilitate and stimulate the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
A chiropractor is a professional who has a university education. He is an expert in the field of functional disorders of the spine and the nervous system. Chiropractors have various techniques that allow them to reach a large audience. More and more people are choosing to turn to chiropractic care to keep their health at an optimal level. By having their spine checked regularly, they avoid the negative effect on health caused by our stressful modern lifestyle.
A chiropractic adjustment is an art in itself. The word is derived from the English 'adjustment', which means, among other things: fine-tuning, making it function better. During an adjustment, the chiropractor corrects the vertebral blockages to reduce interference from the nervous system. The adjustment is specifically tailored to each client.
